Operation Moonshine is the first room created by Angela and Mark for their new company, The Escaporium. I was invited to team up with Jane Norris to be one of the final testers on this new room and to offer our feedback and suggestions. It was opening just 5 days later. They are located on the ground floor of the building, and have a very large space available for their vision of creating 10 themed escape rooms to entertain and engage the people of Halifax.
Operation Moonshine was a delight. They have gone to lengths to theme the room well. It sits in its time period correctly, with authentic props and items that they have scoured the country for. And it has paid off.
When you first enter, you genuinely feel like you have gone back in time to the prohibition era. The game is strongly a search game, but it delights you every time with a find that you can use to build the knowledge you need to work out the solution to the game. There are a lot of locks in the room, and they kept us busy, but there are also some nice hidden little features that people will enjoy.
There are some clues which are obvious, others well hidden, and a tricky little puzzle that needs a bit of patience. Overall, a nice blend to keep a group of 5/6 happy for the duration of a good game. They have added certain items that are there just for sheer fun, and I’m sure younger players will really enjoy that.
It was late testing stage for this game, and they had obviously ironed out any particular difficulties with the puzzles, because they all ran well. I think that perhaps I would have preferred to have slightly fewer hints being offered – but it’s the first time I’ve played as a 2, and perhaps that needs more hints. We exited with 4.49 minutes remaining. I would recommend you go give it a try – it’s the first one in Halifax, so if its on your doorstep you have nothing to lose and lots of fun to gain!
Just keep searching - you will find something.
